Gay
Football Supporters Network (G.F.S.N.)
The
Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) was formed
in 1989 with the purpose of bringing together
gay and lesbian supporters of the beautiful game.
Initially meeting in a small bar in Islington,
the organisation grew into a national concern
very quickly and has continued to be successful
throughout the 1990's to the present day.
The main concerns on its founding still hold true
today - that is that while football is the greatest
sport in the world it can be intimidating for
gays and lesbians due to the homophobic attitudes
of large sections of the crowd. Also the gay scene
is generally disapproving of sport in general
and football in particular so a forum for talking
football in a gay environment was sadly lacking.
At the moment the group is beginning to get involved
with leading clubs to try to provide the impetus
for the Kick Homophobia Out of Football campaign,
which aims to follow the (at least partial) success
of the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.
There are regional groups of GFSN throughout the
country from the South Coast to Yorkshire and
the North West. These groups meet regularly to
watch or play football, or just to socialise.
Group activities take many different forms from
the national get together which can attract over
100 members over a weekend to informal theatre
and cinema trips involving just 2 or 3 members.
Some members offer accomodation to traveling members,
which can be very useful for away trips and is
a good way of meeting new members.
The whole package is held together by the newsletter,
which is published 10 times per year and gives
details of national and regional goings on plus
any scandal involving GFSN members.
Membership is only £15 per year (£22
for dual membership). More information is available
from the GFSN website along with a downloadable
membership form.
